The Miz's Fault For Low Survivor Series Buyrate?
Survivor Series 2011 marked the first time that The Rock made his in-ring return after 7 long years. Despite all this, Survivor Series 2011 did make as many buys as previous Survivor Series events.
It's estimated that Survivor Series 2011 drew 260,000 buys worldwide. This is up from 2010 which drew 244,000 buys and 2009 which only drew 235,000 buys. One would think The Rock's involvement at the PPV would at least push the buyrate over the 300,000 mark. After all, Survivor Series 2010 was headlined only by Randy Orton vs, Wade Barrett while Survivor Series 2009's main event was John Cena defending the WWE title against Triple H and Shawn Michaels.
Looking back even further, Survivor Series 2006 drew 383,000 buys. The main event for that event was Batista vs Booker T! No disrespect to either man but they are not as well known to mainstream audiences as The Rock is.
It's been reported that the low buyrate is being blamed because of The Miz. WWE hasn't really given a reason why only he was blamed but the man has not won a televised match since December 5th, 2011 despite an impressive showing at the Royal Rumble. One would think The Miz may not have been a formidable opponent for The Rock and John Cena and people may not have bought the PPV because they knew it would have had a predictable result.
Either way you look at at, there are many factors that people may not have ordered Survivor Series 2011 despite The Rock being at the PPV actually wrestling. WrestleMania 27 made a huge buyrate and The Rock wasn't even wrestling on that show. Not to mention, Survivor Series 2011 was a more enjoyable event as a whole compared to WrestleMania 27 in my opinion.
For now, some strange reason WWE thinks The Miz is only to blame. All eyes are now set on the buyrate for Wrestlemania 28. I'm sure WWE is hoping WrestleMania 28 will beat WrestleMania 23's record of 1.2 million buys. They have been advertising The Rock vs. John Cena for nearly a year now and The Rock is the biggest star they can get that is both respected by wrestling fans and the mainstream media alike.
